Grenfell Tower was originally intended to be the hub of what was to become the new Nortyh Kensington Village of the Lancaster Road (West) Estate. In it’s original form it was thought by the then Kensingon Borough Council to be too ‘difficult’ and probably expensive, so that a much cheaper (and less well insulated) version was eventually constructed.
Grenfell Tower Should Have Been Much, Much Better ……… Grenfell Tower was intended, when it was first added to the overall design of Lancaster Road Estate by Peter Deakins, primarily to allow Lift Access to Bridges and Access-Ways at upper floor levels which could not under the rules of the time be allowed by any other means. It was certainly intended to allow for balconies of a reasonable size at different levels which would have created fire breaks at the different floors. Kensington Council however insisted that costs be kept to an absolute minimum; this subsequently eventuated in the construction of a building with very poor insulation, disastrously necessitating later attempts to make improvement.
