3. Thorverton an Historic Rural Village ……… as the apotheosis of an idyllic ‘English Village’, Thorverton would be hard to beat, once having all of the attributes desired of any ideal of the Romantic Movement. Much of what made it so iconic – Village Green; Shops and Pubs – have now all but disappeared, leaving only visual remains of what it once was. The life of a recently resurrected shop flickers whilst the only other shop operates in in a caravan on a site subsidised by the Parish Church which itself only functions on rotation. Public Houses, of which there used to be a number, are now mostly gone. In truth the Village has been reduced, like so many ‘villages’ elsewhere, to little more than a dormitory for the nearest ‘big-city’ Exeter, serviced mostly by cars and vans, lucky still to be visited by the very occasional bus, buses themselves being now very, very rare in Devon – or elsewhere. ……… Read More
